What is SMART and how do I use it?
SMART (The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) is one of Metro Detroit’s public bus systems, The agency operates over 40 fixed routes – large buses with room for both seated and standing passengers that follow a set path and a set schedule every day. These routes are open to everyone. Simply board a bus at a signed stop along a route, pay your fare, and go.
When I board the bus, how do I pay?
SMART accepts cash and mobile payment via credit card through Token Transit. If using Token, download the Android or iOS app, select SMART as your agency, and follow the prompts to purchase a pass. All passes are rolling passes, meaning they will never expire before activation. Once activated, select the pass and display the animated blue ring to the driver to board. On occasion, the driver may ask you to tap your screen to verify your pass is active.
Fare is $2 for 4 hours of unlimited rides.
Where can SMART take me in Rochester and Rochester Hills?
Route 492, Rochester Road
Service along the full route will operate from 6:00am to 10:00pm, Monday through Saturday. Route 492 will not operate on Sundays. Additional short runs at 5:00am and 11:00pm will originate from and terminate at Oakland Mall, respectively: See full timetables below.
Northbound: Buses depart the Jason Hargrove Transit Center (State Fair) Bay 9 traveling toward Oakland University at 5:58am, 7:00am, 8:00am, and continue to depart approximately every 60 minutes until 9:00pm, 10:00pm, and 11:00pm.

Use scheduled times at Walton and Livernois (Southbound) and Rochester and Avon (Northbound) to plan your trip; be ready and waiting downtown at these times, as buses may depart anywhere within the ten-minute window between these two timepoints.
